Project Schedule
Cracksealing FY25-26 bidding is closed. The Bid Tab is available below.
Summary
Each year, the City crack seals about half of its roadways, to help extend pavement life. In even years, roads, and alleys east of Hanley Road are crack-sealed. In odd years, the roads, and alleys west of Hanley Road are crack-sealed.
The residential work will be performed M-F, 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The parking lots and urban arterial streets will be sealed outside of peak traffic hours. To facilitate the residential work, please observe the temporary "No Parking" signs posted by the contractor.
This work is highly dependent on the weather conditions. In the event of adverse weather, the scheduled dates will change.
Description: Crack and joint sealing consists of cleaning the cracks in the pavement surface and placing the specified materials into and around the crack. Crack sealing substantially reduces the infiltration of water while reinforcing the pavement. The fill method consists of cleaning the crack and surrounding surface with a pressurized heat lance, then pouring the sealer into the crack via hot pressure feed, and then leveling the surface with a squeegee to form a seal. This work is typically performed with a crew of 6 to 8 laborers.
Purpose: The purpose of sealing cracks in the pavement is to prevent water and incompressible material from entering the pavement structure and causing damage to the surface and subgrade.
Existing pavement condition: The existing pavement should be a solid surface (asphalt or concrete) over an impermeable base. For a flexible pavement (asphalt surface on rock base), crack sealing should begin when the surface is two to four years old. For a non-flexible pavement (asphalt surface on concrete base or concrete surface on rock base), it should be one to two years old. Visible surface distress may include: fairly straight longitudinal and transverse cracks with slight secondary cracking and slight raveling at the crack face.
Existing pavement surface preparation: Prior to sealing the cracks, the pavement should be free of moisture and debris. Generally, a heat lance is used to clean out the cracks.
Performance: The effectiveness of the seal will greatly depend upon the width of crack being sealed and the movement of the pavement structure at the crack.
Life Extension: This treatment is not a one-time application. In order to maintain the seals, a routine crack sealing operation should follow up this treatment, as additional cracks develop. For the purposes of this program, we seal and fill pavement cracks on a biennial basis.
