The Clayton Fire Department would like to help you make your outdoor dining a safe experience for you, your staff and your clientele. If you should decide to use LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas), please be aware of the safety requirements listed below. LPG (Liquefied Propane Gas) is a heavier than air hydrocarbon fuel. LPG is an extremely flammable compressed gas. The liquefied product expands 270 its liquid volume when returning to vapor. LPG tanks or containers shall not be stored inside buildings.

An Operational permit is required for the storage of LP-gas. Tank or container sizes are limited to 20 pounds maximum. Smoking is not allowed within 25 feet of the tanks or containers. The tanks and containers must be stored outside of buildings within a cage or other suitable enclosure to protect against tampering. Storage shall not be within 20 feet of any exit access doors, stairways or areas intended to be used as a means of egress. Tanks and containers must be protected from sunlight. Weeds, grass, brush, trash and other combustible materials must be kept a minimum of 10 feet from LP-gas tanks or containers.

Safety Tips

  • Always follow manufacturer's directions.
  • Make sure connections are tight. If leaks are present, turn off and check connections. Do not operate until the leak is fixed.
  • Be aware that if a leak has occurred, LPG is heavier than air and will settle in low spots.
  • Keep cylinders upright, even when empty, to ensure the pressure relief valve can operate effectively.
  • Protect cylinders from direct sun.

Call 911 if a leak or fire occurs when using LP Gas equipment.
