On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Lincoln, enslaved Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally received word that they were free from bondage. This momentous occasion has been celebrated as Juneteenth — a combination of June and 19 — for over 150 years. Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday in 2021.

 City offices will be closed in observance of the holiday. The Center will be open 9:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m., and the Aquatic Center will be open 10:00 a.m.- 8:00 p.m.
